It’s been a while since our last post, but in that time you’ll be pleased to hear we’ve been busy working away on a new bike design. ColourBolt was asked to put together ‘a very light and racy road bike.’ The result is Maximum Black, a road bike designed with a single purpose in mind; ‘maximum stiffness, minimum weight.’
Built with the very finest components and finishing kit, the ColourBolt Maximum Black Road Disc is a bike for those who seek to push the limits in riding and blackness.
Designed to be as efficient and comfortable as possible, the ‘Max Black’ uses large section, shaped tubing to increase stiffness between the head tube, BB and rear dropouts – we used both Columbus Max and Life tubesets for this. We used slender, lightweight seatstays and a tapered top tube to boost the overall comfort of the ride.
Thin-walled, butted Columbus Niobium tubing allowed us to achieve the targets for weight, efficiency and comfort without sacrificing durability.
The frame features a fillet braze between the seat stays but is predominantly TIG-welded which helps bring down weight. For this extremely specialist part of the build we enlisted the help of BTR Fabrications, specialists in TIG welding.
The Max Black is presented in ColourBolt’s softly textured yet super-tough finish, Drenched Black. The textured finish over the TIG welding creates a smooth, beautifully contoured look, giving the frame a clean and almost seamless appearance.
In the pursuit of the very best components for this build we even made time to visit the Enve factory in Ogden, Utah, where we checked out their world-leading components. It’s fair to say we were very impressed by what we saw and the pictured build is specced with an Enve wheelset and forks.
The total weight of the bike in the photos is 8.7kg and it features a Sram groupset, Chris King headset and Thomson bars and stem. Whichever way you look at it, this bike is precision engineered from top to toe.
It was by no means a solo effort putting this beautiful machine together and we have to thank both Roger Graver of Mosquito and Tam Hamilton of BTR Fabrications for their design and engineering expertise.
